The Waterberry is a large sized evergreen tree occurring in stream beds and wet areas of the bushveld. The timber is of good quality and is used in furniture manufacture. The wood is also used as general purpose timber for the manufacture of beams etc. The wood is also popular for building boats as it is very durable in water.
The leaves are browsed by game such as Kudu,
Nyala, and Bushbuck. The fruit which
appear from August to November are eaten by birds such as the Grey
Lourie, African green pigeons. Bushbabies, Ververt
monkeys, and Baboons also relish the
fruit.
The leaves are made into an extract to cure diarrhoea and as a purgative. Fish poison can be made from powdered bark.
