Redbacked Shrike (Lanius collurio)
The Redbacked Shrike breeds in Europe
and Asia. Migrates to South Africa and is found in most areas of
this country except the south.
The Redbacked Shrike flies back to
Europe during April.
Insects, small reptiles and small birds are the main diet of this
bird. It is known to impale its prey on thorns.
It normally perches low down in trees
and fences from where it drops down on to its prey.
