Cape Pangolin (Manis temminicki)
The picture on the left is of a Pangolin
curled up in it's defensive position.
This shy creature is nocturnal, though sometimes diurnal. It spends the day
hidden in a burrow. It prefers sandy soils where it can dig for it's main
diet of termites.
About 40 inches in length and weighing up to
18 lb. When in danger it curls up into a ball with it's scales protecting
its soft under belly, head and feet. Endangered in parts of it's habitat due
to the use of the scales in tribal medical remedies and witchcraft.(Muti).
