The Wild dog (also known
as the hunting dog) is about the size of a big domestic dog. The Wild
Dog has a large head with very powerful jaws and a slender body. The
ears of a wild dog are rounded and very wide. Wild dog live in packs
sometimes as many as 30. They are rarely seen alone or in pairs. Wild
dogs hunt in an organised pack with some of the dogs leading the chase,
whilst others follow behind to take over when the leaders are tired.
Wild dog literally eat their prey alive, tearing pieces off the animal
even before it is dead. Small antelope can be eaten in as little as
ten minutes. Waterbuck, Impala,
Reedbuck rodents and ground birds are all hunted by these voracious
carnivores. |
