The Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus
niloticus) inhabits most large rivers and dams of Southern Africa.
Adult crocodiles eat fish, mammals and birds. Crocodiles lie in wait
for animals that come to drink. They lunge out of the water and drag
the animal into the water and drown it. To break pieces off the carcass,
crocodiles bite and then roll themselves over. The female crocodile
lays as many as 60 - 80 eggs in a sand bank. The nest is protected
by the adults from scavengers such as Monitor
lizards . When the young hatch they are carried in the mothers
mouth to the water and released. Young crocodiles eat insects, frogs
and small fish. |
