Pearlspotted Owl (Glaucidium perlatum)
The Pearlspotted Owl is a
small owl and has no eartufts. The back of its head has a false
face marking of two dark patches surrounded by white. The call is
a loud tiu-tiu-tiu which rises in volume. Widespread in the bushveld
of South Africa. Said to be able to catch bats in flight, it normally
drops onto its prey from a perch. Nests in a hole in a tree. In
this photograph the owl is having a bath in a stone hollow.
