The Mamba river is the largest
river running through Silent Valley Game Ranch. The river rises
in Welgevonden Game Reserve, to the south east of the ranch. The
mamba flows through the southern portion of the ranch for about
4.5 Kms. from east to west, and leaves the ranch at its lowest altitude.
The Mamba flows into the Matlabas river, which eventually flows
into the Limpopo river on the Botswana border.
This is a very scenic part of Silent Valley Ranch. The river runs
through sandstone gorges, from pool to pool, over rapids. This area
of the Ranch has sweet grasses and riverine bush. Nyala
, Bushbuck, Waterbuck,
Kudu and Eland frequent the river
banks.
In summer, when the rain falls, the Mamba river can become a raging
torrent for a few hours, and sometimes days. Mamba in Flood
